Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day!
May 22 is celebrated as the Bitcoin Pizza Day! It is the anniversary of the two most expensive pizzas ever bought in history.
The pizza story is perhaps the first known real-life bitcoin transaction
Laszlo Hanyecz, is the famous software engineer, aka “Bitcoin pizza guy,” who 9 years ago bought two Papa John’s pizzas for 10,000 BTC. Back then, 10,000 BTC was around $25, but, by today’s exchange rate, where 1 Bitcoin equals $7,915, that is, approximately, $80 million.
As an early investor in cryptocurrencies, Hanyecz believes that cryptocurrencies will eventually replace fiat currencies, and will be used in everyday transactions, to buy, among other things, pizzas, as Hanyecz did in 2010. Laszlo was interviewed by CBS’s Anderson Cooper for his show “60 Minutes.” As he claims in the video, Hanyecz has spent around 100,000 Bitcoin on a number of things, including, mostly pizza. That’s $800 million!
Hanyecz’s story, despite being a cruel reminder of how much his Bitcoin would have been worth today, confirms that cryptocurrencies were made to be used in everyday transactions. As he says, buying things with cryptos back then was difficult, due to their low value but also people’s lack of knowledge. You can read the original thread as it appeared on BitcoinTalk.
